India has said it is time to move beyond the resettlement of the war displaced to the issue of a political solution to the Tamil problem in Sri Lanka.This was conveyed by Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao to the Srilankan side during her talks in colombo. She told reporters today, before leaving for New Delhi India that while the focus on develop and rehabilitation is very welcome, a long term perspective that also includes the issues relating to the political settlement that would meet some of the needs of the minorities should also be kept in mind. She said that the Sri Lankan President has given an assurance that he is focused on the need for political reconciliation and he plans to move it.On the decision to construct 50,000 houses for the displaced persons – IDPS – in North and Eastern Sri Lanka, Rao said the people had welcomed the move of the Indian government. She said a pilot project for constructing about 1000 houses will be started immediately. It will target vulnerable groups like war widows, older and senior citizens, who have lost their limbs and those who are in urgent need of assistance.She said local communities will be involved in taking the project forward. People who have been traumatized for so many years should get a sense of return of normalcy to their lives and to regain their livelihood. Rao said the Indian team also discussed constructing some university hostels in Jaffna under the small development projects of the government of India Details are being worked out.She expressed confidence that by December this year the resettlement of the IDPS will be completed even though the issue of housing, roofs repairs and livelihood restoration will continue to get priority.The Indian Foreign secretary was on a three day visit to the island nation to get an overview of the progress of resettlement of war-displaced Tamil people in the north and discuss utilisation of Indian aid.During her tour she visited the war ravaged Northern Province including Jaffna. She also went to Trincomalee in the eastern Province. She held wide ranging discussion with both the government and the opposition parties including a cross section of the Tamil leaders in Sri Lanka.
