The High Commission of India in Colombo has today conveyed to the Government of Sri Lanka that New Delhi desires to continue its assistance in the field of de-mining in war ravaged northern Sri Lanka. In a letter addressed to Dr. PB Jayasundera, the Sri Lankan Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Development, Indian High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha informed that the Government of India had agreed to extend the terms of seven Indian de-mining agencies who have been working in Sri Lanka for several years.The extension of the contracts of these organizations is valued at 3.65 million dollars. It is expected that, in addition to contributing to the critical task of resettlement of internally displaced people, these teams will also be deployed for the de-mining work required for the reconstruction of the northern railway network. High Commissioner Kantha also reiterated on this occasion the continued commitment of the Government of India to assist the Government of Sri Lanka in the task of reconstruction and rehabilitation in northern Sri Lanka.
