The government today said that it has been consistently taking up with Islamabad the issue of Indian prisoners languishing in Pakistani jails. The External Affairs Minister Mr. S.M. Krishna informed the Lok Sabha today that 474 Indian nationals are being held in custody in Pakistan. He said that 218 of them civilian prisoners, 182 Indian fishermen and 74 missing defence personnel. In a written reply Mr. Krishna said that the matter has been raised at various levels with Pakistan. The issue was taken up during Home Minister's visit to Islamabad in June and foreign minister level talks there in July. Our correspondent says that India Pakistan judicial committee on prisoners consisting of judges from each side was set up to recommend steps for expeditious release of the prisoners being held in each others country and for humane treatment of the prisoners.
