India congratulates Karzai; says need to meet challenges posed by Taliban & al-Qawda

India on Tuesday congratulated Afghan President Hamid Karzai on his re-election and said it is committed to the process of Afghanistan's stabilisation, reconstruction and development. A statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs said, there is need for the international community to stand steadfast against the challenges posed by the al-Qaeda and the Taliban, which threatens the stability of Afghanistan and that of the world as a whole. Mr Karzai was declared president for another five years after the cancellation of a run-off ballot by the country's election commission, which followed the withdrawal at the weekend of his only challenger, Dr Abdullah Abdullah.US President Barack Obama today congratulated Hamid Karzai on his re-election as President of Afghanistan. Congratulating Karzai over telephone on his re-election, Obama asked Karzai to improve governance, besides eradicating corruption. Later, Obama said that Karzai assured him that he understood the importance of the time of his re-election. The US President said although the process was messy, he was pleased with the final outcome as it was in accordance with Afghan law.
