India concerned over killing of its fisherman allegedly by Lankan navy, takes up the matter with PM Wickremesinghe

India has expressed concern over the killing of an Indian fisherman allegedly by Sri Lankan navy. Ministry of External Affairs has said that Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka has taken up the matter of killing of Indian fisherman with the Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. It said, the Sri Lankan Navy has promised a full and thorough investigation into the incident.<br/><br/>In Tamil Nadu, political parties and fishermen associations have condemned the killing of Rameswaram fisherman by Sri Lankan Navy. There are sporadic protests in front of Rameswaram Government hospital where relatives are refusing to receive the body of fisherman. Thousands of fishermen and their families are protesting in Rameswaram. Sri Lankan Navy shot dead an Indian fisherman from Rameswaram when he was fishing near Kachatheevu last night. <br/><br/>Chief Minister Edappady K Palaniswamy has condemned the incident and announced 5 lakh rupees compensation to the fisherman's family. Union Minister of state Pon Radhakrishnan, DMK working president MK Stalin and PMK leader Dr Ramdoss have condemned the incident. <br/><br/>There is shock and disbelief in fishermen hamlets of Tamil Nadu as Sri Lankan Navy has mercilessly shot dead 22 year old fisherman Bridgo when he was fishing near Kachatheevu. The family members are shattered as their bread winner was killed. Sri Lankan Navy attacking Tamil fishermen and apprehending them is a routine affair. <br/><br/>But Lankan Navy firing at unarmed fishermen who were fishing in traditional zones has created panic and anger among locals. DMK working president MK Stalin has demanded Rs 25 lakhs and PMK leader Ramadass Rs one crore compensation for the family of the fisherman. Sri Lankan Navy has shot dead an Indian fisherman after five years since a fisherman from Karaikal was killed in 2011 April.<br/><br/>Fishermen associations in Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai and Nagai have announced strike condemning the incident. The fishermen urged central government to intervene and secure the release of 85 Tamil fishermen lodged in Lankan jail and their 128 fishing boats.
