President Pratibha Patil said that India is committed to promoting regional peace and security in Asia and enhancing relations with the West Asian nations in the political, economic and cultural fields.Talking to reporters on board the Air India on way to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, she said, New Delhi seeks to further reinforce relations with the UAE and Syria. Reiterating government’s resolve that the welfare of the overseas Indian community, particularly workers, a top priority, Mrs. Patil said, for this reason only the Indian Workers’ Resource Centre is being opened in Dubai.The 24-hour helpline will provide counselling services to workers from the country who are in distress.Earlier, Mrs. Patil arrived in the capital of the United Arab Emirates last night on her maiden visit to the Gulf that will also take her to Syria with an aim to boost India’s ties with the oil-producing region. During her nine-day tour, Ms. Patil will visit Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah in the UAE and will later go to Damascus and Allepo in Syria.Ms. Patil, who is visiting the UAE at the invitation of President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will be meeting the top leaders in the country on a whole range of issues aimed at further consolidating bilateral ties.Mrs. Patil will also be interacting with the business community, both Indian and local, in the UAE to boost the bilateral trade.
