India has committed itself to double the scholarship programme offered to Sri Lanka as part of the plan for enhanced cooperation in the education sector in the near future. Speaking during the inauguration of the Vocational Training Centre, Nagavillu this sunday, the High Commissioner of India, Mr. Ashok K. Kantha said that New Delhi was committed to extend technical assistance to the Ten Year Presidential Initiative to steer Sri Lanka towards a Trilingual Society by 2020.He said scholarship programmes for Sri Lankan students were being provided in a variety of fields such as engineering and other professional disciplines, as well as humanities.Under these schemes, about 450 students benefited for studies within Sri Lanka and over 250 went to India in the year 2009.High Commissioner also noted that education was a key dimension of the partnership between the two countries, with great prospects for future development.
