India commits itself to Iran-Pak-India gas pipeline

New Delhi today renewed its commitment to Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project. Official sources said in New Delhi today that the security of the pipeline and pricing of the gas are some of the issues that are being discussed before the project is finalised. A working group set up to enhance cooperation in the energy sector between the two countries is meeting in New Delhi shortly to discuss the issues regarding the pipeline project and partnership in other areas of energy security. The Iranian Foreign Minister, Mr. Manouchehr Motaki who arrived in New Delhi this morning held delegation level talks with his Indian counterpart Mr. S.M. Krishna and discussed all issues of mutual concern. Our correspondent reports that enhancing the trade basket and terrorism with a special reference to Afghanistan and Pakistam also figured prominently in the talks.AIR correspondent Vijay Raina reports that the Iranian leader held talks with the Prime Minister and other Indian leaders and there was an emphasis to add greater economic content to the bilateral relations. The trade between the two countries has already reached 13 billion dollars, most of which consists of import of crude oil from Iran. Now, the bilateral trade is enhancing and New Delhi is tapping new areas to strike a balance between the import and export. The issues that came up for discussion include, north-south corridor project, concluding a bilateral investment promotion agreement besides pacts on double taxation, banking. Cooperation in the fields of education, culture and bio-technology also hogged the limelight in the talks. Leaders of both the countries expressed similar views on the growing threat of terrorism in Afghanistan and Pakistan. With growing ties between the two countries, New Delhi today renewed its invitation to the Iranian President to India.
