India, China working on new Border Cooperation Agreement

India and China are examining proposals for a Border Defence Co-operation Agreement.

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, who returned to New Delhi after a two day visit to China, yesterday said that China had given a proposal on the issue and that India has also given a counter proposal to China.

Both are studying the proposals. He, however, clarified that the proposals are not meant to replace any existing ones.

On the recent incursion by Chinese troops in the Daulat Beg Oldi sector, Khurshid said, he had raised the issue with Beijing and that both sides need to do an analysis of why it happened.

He said both sides will be able to take some lessons from the recent incursion to ensure that such things do not get repeated.
