India, China to set up joint mechanism to assess construction work of dams on Brahmaputra river

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh returned to New Delhi last night after a successful visit to South Africa to attend the BRICS Summit.

In the first delegation level meeting with the new Chinese President on the sidelines of the Summit, both leaders agreed to have frequent high level exchanges.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh proposed a Sino-Indian joint mechanism on assessing construction work on Chinese dams on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet Autonomous Region.

He requested the Chinese government to provide a joint mechanism to enable India to assess the type of construction activity that is going on in the Tibetan Autonomous Region.
