India – China: Confidence building measures put in place to reduce threat perception

New Delhi says a series of confidence building measures have been put in place to reduce the perception that India and China have threat from each other. The External Affairs Minister, Mr S M Krishna while addressing a function in New Delhi this evening, said that the tranquility has been maintained on the border for more than two decades and its non-resolution has not prevented the two countries in cooperating in a number of areas mutually beneficial to them. He asserted that the relations between the two countries have gone beyond the established framework and this is reflected by the positions taken by Beijing and New Delhi on trade liberalization at Doha and in the climate change debate.

The Minister dismissed the reports that India views China’s development as a threat and said that New Delhi recognizes that cooperation and competition can overlap as it is not possible to have congruence of interests between the two countries on every issue. He said the differences wherever exist; need to be handled with dialogue and diplomacy. Mr. Krishna said that the two countries have vibrant system of political exchanges and have created a full-fledged architecture of dialogue at the official level. The people-to-people contact will further cement the relations between the two countries.

Replying a question Mr Krishna said that Nepal would understand India’s security concerns while deciding its bilateral relations with other countries.
