India and China have agreed to resume high-level defence exchanges and establish a working mechanism to handle border affairs. These decisions were taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Chinese President Hu Jintao in the Chinese coastal resort of Sanya. National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon told reporters after the 50-minute long meeting that it has been agreed that a multi-command Indian army delegation will visit China later this year. India suspended defence exchanges in August last year, objecting to China issuing a visa on a loose sheet to Lt. Gen. B.S. Jaiswal of the army's Northern Command. He said that the two countries have agreed in principle to work out a mechanism to consult and coordinate on border affairs. The official border mechanism will ensure cooperation in border areas. Shivshankar Menon said that they will work as per the agreements signed between the two countries in 1993 and 1996. He, however, said that the special representatives of the two countries will continue their dialogue on the settlement of border issue and next round of talks will be held in Delhi. Mr. Menon said that the two countries are set to achieve trade target of 100 billion US dollars by 2015. They will soon hold economic dialogue to enhance trade and economic partnership. Referring to trade imbalance he said that Prime Minister has asked for greater market access to Indian companies particularly in pharma, IT, agro industry and engineering sectors. Mr. Menon said the two leaders launched year of India China exchange and many high level visits will take place during the year. Both leaders extended invitations to visit each other's countries and both Dr. Singh and Hu Jintao accepted the invitation. The Chinese President emphasized on maintaining high-level exchanges between India and China and to enhance political mutual trust between the two countries. Describing the two fastest growing economies of the world as important neighbors, Hu said Relations between the two countries are healthy and there is a stable development momentum since April 2010. Dr. Manmohan Singh in his opening remarks said that India is keen to expand areas of cooperation with China and reaffirmed New Delhi's commitment to strengthen economic and strategic partnership intensely and in every possible way with Beijing. Giving details about the meeting, the Prime Minister had with the Russian President, Mr. Menon said that the two leaders underscored the need to reexamine the nuclear safety and execute it jointly. They asserted that it is important to see what measures can be taken internationally apart from internal procedures being followed by the two countries. The Prime Minister is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with the Presidents of South Africa and Brazil on Thursday.
