India celebrating Id-ul-Zuha with religious fervour today

The festival of sacrifice – Id-ul-Zuha is being celebrated throughout the country today with traditional fervour and gaiety.

Special prayers and exchange of greetings and gifts mark the occasion.

The festival, which is also known as Bakra-Eid, coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.
Presidents, Vice-President, Prime Minister and UPA Chairperson have greeted the people on the occasion.

In her message, President Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil said the festival strengthen the foundations of the national unity and harmony and inspire the people to work for the well-being of human beings.

Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari said, this festival highlights the virtues of sacrifice and inspires for inculcating the spirit of compassion and love towards the downtrodden.

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said that Id Ul Zuha celebrates the spirit of giving and sacrifice.

UPA Chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi said the festival symbolises great sacrifices of Prophet Ibrahim.

She said the festival rekindles our faith on the ideals of peace and service of humanity.
