India can achieve double digit growth with prudent policies: PM

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said that India has become one of the most preferred global destinations for foreign investors. Delivering the convocation speech at the 46th Convocation of IIM Ahmedabad this evening, Dr.Singh said that India has emerged as the world’s fastest growing economies with its savings and investment rates giving confidence that with prudent policies and sound economic management, the country can achieve double digit growth. Dr. Singh said that the success of reforms unleashed 20 years back is evident.The Prime Minister however said the people should also recognize that our high growth is not sustainable unless it is made more inclusive to reduce social disparities. He said that there are many business opportunities in keeping a billion Indians well fed, healthy and educated. If we provide productive employment to them, we would have created one of the world’s largest consumer markets.Dr. Singh has said that while taking pride in our successes, we should also be conscious of the challenges that persist. He said the country still has to deal with the problems of poverty, hunger, disease and corruption. To overcome the challenges, we must ensure greater penetration of quality and affordable social services by bridging the infrastructure deficit and regional divide. He appealed to the captains of industry to look more closely the issues like climate change and environmental damage that threaten our way of life. Congratulating the Students of IIM Ahmedabad, Dr. Singh said that with education and training, they would not only contribute to our nation’s progress but will lead the world for more prosperity, equitability and sustainability.Governor of Gujarat Dr.Shrimati Kamala, Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Chairman of Board of Directors of IIM-Ahmedabad Dr.Vijaypat Singhania and Director of IIM-Ahmedabad Professor Samir Barua were present on this occasion.
