India has called upon the US companies to invest in the growing power sector in the country. In a statement released in New Delhi, Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde asserted that lucrative opportunities are available for the investors in the country. He added that the contribution of the private sector in electricity output is likely to go up to 60 per cent in the 12th five year plan. Presently it stands at 30 percent. Mr. Shinde also said that about 230 billion US dollars investment will be required during the plan period. He stated that country's present power generation capacity is just above one lakh eighty thousand MegaWatts. The Power Minister added that over eighty thousand units of power capacity is under construction. Mr. Shinde is in US to attend the US-India Economic Opportunities and Synergies Summit being held at Chicago.
