India calls for intensified global efforts to promote breastfeeding

India today called for intensified global efforts to promote
breastfeeding. Addressing the World Breastfeeding Conference in New Delhi, Women and Child Development minister Krishna Tirath said, the key to successful breastfeeding is proper education and change of behaviour and mindsets.
The minister said the government has recently launched a nationwide information, education and communication campaign against malnutrition which focuses on key messages of breastfeeding. The campaign will use the media to convey motivational messages to mothers, families and community organisations.

Ms Tirath stressed the need to ensure and monitor compliance of Infant Milk Substitutes Act 2003. She sought the support of professionals and the civil society to ensure strict adherence to the Act.

Speaking on the occasion, External Affairs minister Salman Khurshid said educating families on the benefits of breastfeeding is very important and priority be given particulary to low income groups and marginalized sections in the society.
