India becomes number one test team

India shot into Number one position in test Cricket after 36 years, winning the third and final Test against Sri Lanka at Brabourne stadium in Mumbai by an innings and 24 runs. Resuming at their overnight score of 274 for six, Sri Lanka were all out for 309 runs. Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakara, who had made 133 yesterday, lost his wicket at his individual score of 137 after putting some resistance. India's Zahir Khan claimed 5 wickets. Earlier, chasing Sri Lanka's first innings score of 393 runs, India declared their first innings after piling up a huge total of 726 runs for nine, which was India's highest ever score of a single innings, with the help of Virender Shehwag's 293 and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's ton.Virender Shehwag was adjudged 'Man of the Match' and 'Man of the Series' for his outstanding performance in the three test match series, which India won two-nil. The President Mrs. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil has congratulated the Indian team for becoming No. 1 in ICC test ranking. She said it is well deserved and reflects the depth of talent of Indian cricketers.
