India become power surplus nation, net exporter of electricity in last 9 years: R K Singh

India has become a power surplus nation and net exporter of electricity in the last nine years. The energy shortage in the country has come down from 4.2 percent  in 2014 to around 0.2  now. This was stated by Union Power and New and Renewable Energy Minister R K Singh while addressing media in New Delhi today on the achievements of the power sector during the last nine years. Mr Singh informed that all villages and households have been electrified in the country and added that 2.86 crore households have been connected through electricity.
 
The Minister said the average hours of supply in rural areas has increased from 12.5 in 2014  to 20.53  now while it stands at 23.78 hours for urban areas. He said several initiatives for the promotion of renewable energy have also been taken in the last nine years resulting in an increase of non-fossil installed capacity to 43 percent now. He said the government has awarded 1,000 megawatt hour battery storage project which is one of the largest in the world.
 
He also talked about major reforms taken by the Ministry during the last nine years including the Electricity (Right to Consumers ) Rule for consumer empowerment, revamped distribution sector scheme for strengthening distribution, real time market, late payment surcharge rule to improve sector viability, and General Network Access regime for ease of doing Business. He said the government also has ambitious plans for integrating over 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
