India defeated hosts Sri Lanka by 5 wickets in the third one day international of the 5-match cricket series, played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo last night. After opting to bat first, Sri Lanka amassed a formidable 286 for 5 in the stipulated 50 overs, courtesy two brilliant 121-run fourth wicket stand between Skipper Mahela Jayawardene and Kumara Sangakkara and a brilliant end-of-an innings came from Angello Mathews, who was ably supported by Jeevan Mendis. Chasing a victory target of 287, the visitors lost Virender Sehwag early, bringing in-form Virat Kohli at the crease with opener Gautam Gambhir. Both shared 105 runs for the second wicket giving India a healthy platform. Gambhir scored his 11th ODI century, before running out on 102. When Gambhir got out, India were 196 for 5, looking in deep trouble. Suresh Raina then came to the Indian rescue scoring an exceptional 65 off just 45 balls and guiding India to surpass the target with 2 balls to spare. Raina was adjudged man of the match. The fourth One-Dayer between the two sides will be played at the same venue on Tuesday.
