India beat Pak 4-1 in their first match of hockey WC in New Delhi

India beat Pakistan 4-1 in their first match in the hockey World Cup at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi yesterday. For India ace drag-flicker Sandeep Singh rose to the occasion and converted two penalty corners as hosts outplayed Pakistan in a thrilling Pool B match of the Hero Honda World Cup. Sandeep Singh scored two goals, while Shivender Singh and Prabhjot Singh scored one goal each. Sandeep Singh was declared man of the match. For Pakistan, Sohail Abbas scored the loan goal in the 59 th minute.Both India and Pakistan earned five penalty corners each, out of which the home team converted two while their opponent found the net once. With this victory, India had avenged their 3-6 Champions Challenge defeat at the hands of Pakistan in Salta, Argentina last December.The victory gave one lakh ropees each to the players and support staff of the team.Sahara India Pariwar has also announced a rewardof 2 lakh for every player, coach and assistant coach of the Indian hockey team.The President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil congratulated the Indian hockey team for beating arch-rivals Pakistan. In her message, the President congratulate the Indian team for their splendid victory and expressed hope that they will continue with the fine form in the tournament.Spain started their campaign on a perfect note, beating South Africa 4-2 in the inaugural match. Spain scored two goals in both the halves through Roc Oliva in 19th minute, Miquel Delas in 21st minute, Rodrigo Garza in 46th minute and Pau Quemada in 60th. While for South Africa Julian Hykes and Ian Haley hit two goals in the first period.In Pool 'B' match, European champion England stunned Olympic silver medallist Australia 3-2.
