The first round of the meeting of the joint India-Bangladesh River Commission was held in New Delhi today to discuss the sharing of Teesta waters and other outstanding issues. Later speaking to newsmen, the Water Resources Minister, Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal said that the two sides have made good headway. He said there will be two more meetings on Friday. Mr Bansal said, he was hopeful that certain issues will be finalised at the talks.

Expressing similar sentiments, Mr Mustafa Farooq Mohammed, MP and member of delegation said that the two sides carried forward the spirit of the joint communique issued at the end of Bangladesh Prime Minister's recent visit in India at today's meeting. He told AIR that the manner in which the two sides have dealt the issue of dredging of Ichamati River can be a model on how the common rivers can unite and not divide the people and the nations. The meeting of the joint commission was held today after a gap of five years.

The Prime Ministers of the two countries at their meeting in January had given instructions for holding the Commission Meeting and concluding the Teesta river sharing talks at the earliest, in view of the suffering of the people on both sides because of the scarcity of lean season flows of the river. AIR correspondent says that the meeting was held in a cordial and cooperative atmosphere.
