India and Bangladesh are working towards reaching an agreement on a joint border management co-ordination plan. According to sources, both sides are expecting that the agreement may be signed during the proposed visit of Home Minister P. Chidambaram to Dhaka. Mr. Chidambaram is scheduled to reach Dhaka on Friday and will be holding talks with his Bangladeshi counter-part Sahara Khatun on Saturday. The talks between the two Home ministers is expected to focus on a variety of issues which include co-operation in security issues, consular matters, border management, steps against militancy, and crimes like arms ,drugs , fake currency and human trafficking along the border areas. Earlier in the month following the talks with External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna in Dhaka, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni had said that both sides are working to finalize the proposed joint border management plan to be followed by the Border Security Force and Border Guards Bangladesh along identified sensitive patches along the border. The Home Minister’s visit to Dhaka on Friday comes even as officials from both sides are engaged in conducting joint surveys to assess the ground situation of adversely possessed lands in a bid to resolve outstanding land boundary issues. In addition to this, officials from both countries have just completed a joint census in the enclave areas to estimate the number of people living in these areas. During his visit to Bangladesh earlier in the month External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna had said that the two sides are hopeful of reaching a comprehensive solution to the outstanding land boundary issues during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Dhaka in September.
