India- Bangladesh usher in new era of cooperation, sign five agreements

Ushering in a new era of cooperation in their historic ties, India and Bangladesh today signed five agreements including three anti terror and security related pacts . These three agreements are on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, transfer of sentenced persons and combating international terrorism, organised crime and illegal drug trafficking.<br/><br/>A MoU on the cooperation in power including inter grid connectivity was also inked besides signing of a cultural exchange programme. The agreements were signed after the talks this evening between the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh and his Bangladeshi counterpart Mrs Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi on Monday.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent says that expanding security cooperation, transit and connectivity, water sharing and ways to promote trade and investment are understood to have dominated the agenda of the talks between the two leaders.<br/><br/>Earlier, speaking to media after a ceremonial welcome was accorded to her at the Forecourts of Rashtrapati Bhawan, Mrs Sheikh Hasina described India as a good neighbour. She said, said that peace and cooperation is necessary for ridding the region of poverty.<br/><br/>The Bangladesh prime Minister who arrived last night on a three day state visit to India will be conferred the Indira Gandhi Prize for peace, development and disarmament tomorrow. The Bangladesh Prime Minister also called on the President, Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil.
