India, Bangladesh to work together for conservation of Sundarban

India and Bangladesh are planning to work together for the conservation and protection of Sundarban Mangrove Forests.

Talking exclusively to AIR Correspondent in Dhaka, the Bangladesh Minister of Environment and Forests Dr. Hasan Mahmud said that he will be going to Kolkotta tomorrow to attend a conference being organized on the protection of Sundarbans. He said, the conference will also be attended by Union Envirornment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh and the West Bengal Forest Minister and it would focus on joint efforts to protect the world’s biggest mangrove forests.

Mr.Mahmud said that he would also use this opportunity during the conference being organized in Kolkotta to gain support for the campaign to vote Sundarbans as one of the seven natural wonders of the world on an online web based poll which is currently on.

Mr.Mahmud said that as per the census conducted by his government in 2004, the number of tigers in Bangladesh is more than 400. He said that though this is an indication of an increase in the number, a correct estimate will be possible only by a joint census with India as the tigers may be migrating between the areas of Sunderbans in both the countries.
