India and Bangladesh will be holding a joint census in the enclave areas along the border as a part of the process of resolving the outstanding land boundary issues. The three day census operations involving officials from both India and Bangladesh is scheduled to begin from tomorrow and is aimed at estimating the number of people living in these areas. According to a mutually reconciled list of enclaves agreed to by both sides, there are 111 Indian enclaves in Bangladesh and 51 Bangladeshi enclaves in India. During the joint boundary working group meeting in November last year both the sides agreed to jointly take steps necessary to facilitate the process of exchange of these enclaves to their respective countries. In addition to this the two countries also agreed to work constructively towards resolving differences to demarcate the land boundary in all three undemarcated segments i.e. Daikhata-56, Lathitilla-Dumabari and Muhuri River (Belonia). External Affairs Minister S.M Krishna who visited Dhaka last week to hold talks with his Bangladeshi Counterpart Dr.Dipu Moni had said that both countries are working towards comprehensive resolution of the land boundary issues. Both the countries are optimistic of reaching an Historic agreement during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Dhaka in September to resolve land boundary issues in the spirit of the 1974 land boundary agreement signed between the two countries.
