India and Bangladesh signed an extradition treaty and revised travel agreements on Monday following the Home Minister level talks in Dhaka. The agreements were signed by Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Bangladesh Home Minister M.K.Alamgir.
In a Joint press statement issued after the talks, both the Home Ministers expressed their belief that the extradition treaty will help to increase co-operation among law enforcing agencies of the two countries to curb criminal activities.
Outlining the main features of the revised travel agreement, Shinde said that the condition of the time limit of two months for re-entry under tourist visa for Bangladeshi citizens will now be removed and they can travel more frequently.
In addition to this, the visa rule have also been liberalised for business persons, medical patients and their attendants, students and journalists.
Reacting to reporters question about whether ULFA leaders, Anoop Chetia will be extradited under the treaty signed today, Bangladesh Home Minsiter, M.K.Alamgir said that his government will be able to take a decision in his case only after the country's' Supreme court gives its verdict on the petition filed by him seeking political asylum in Bangladesh.
