India, Bangladesh set to sign pact on river water sharing

India and Bangladesh today said that they have reached an understanding towards a framework for an agreement to facilitate a water sharing arrangement during the dry season water flows of Teesta and Feni Rivers. In a joint press release issued at the end of the Water Resources Secretary level meeting in Dhaka today, both sides said that they held comprehensive discussions which has helped in removing the differences and facilitated an improved understanding towards a framework of an agreement. In addition to this, the two sides also held discussions on formulating a work plan on sharing the waters of six other common rivers which are Dharla, Dudhkumar, manu, Khowai, Gumti and Muhuri. Mr. Dhruv Vijai Singh, Secretary Ministry of water resources is led the Indian delegation while his counterpart Mr. Shaikh Wahid-uz-Zaman led the Bangladesh delegation during the talks.Addressing a joint press conference, Mr. Dhruv Vijai Singh said that the two countries have moved beyond the level of the Principle of sharing for Teesta water that India had proposed and the Bangladesh ‘s draft framework proposal to a level where it will be possible for the political leadership to take it forward.Byte Mr. Dhruv Vijai Singh, Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India. The Bangladesh Water Resources Ministry Secretary Mr. Shaikh Wahid uz Zaman said he was hopeful that an interim agreement would be signed during the upcoming proposed visit of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to Bangladesh.
