India and Bangladesh began a new chapter in bilateral trade today with the inauguration of the first border haat at Kalaichar in Meghalaya and Baliamri of Kurigram district in Bangladesh.Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma and Bangladesh Commerce Minister Faruk Khan jointly inaugurated the border haat market.Mr. Anand Sharma has expressed confidence that the opening of border Haats will make the border villages on both sides more prosperous through improved market accessibility for their locally produced goods. It is estimated that annually bilateral trade worth $20 million will be conducted through the border haats.India and Bangladesh had agreed to open the Border Haat markets during the visit of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India in January last year.
