India asks UN to adopt comprehensive treaty to tackle terrorism

India has asked the United Nations to adopt a comprehensive treaty to tackle the global menace of terrorism. Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York last night, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said that to defeat this scourge, it is imperative for the global community to build on international cooperation and take concerted action against terrorists and their sponsors. Mr. Krishna called for urgent reforms in the UN Security Council so that the world body can effectively meet emerging global challenges. He said, the UN Security Council should reflect contemporary realities. Mr. Krishna said, an overwhelming majority of nations wants expansion of both permanent and non-permanent seats. Turning to the issue of climate change, Mr. Krishna stressed that developed countries need to take the lead in fulfilling their various commitments; this will help in combating the crisis facing the global community.
