India has asked the Maldives to ensure protection of Indian interests and security of its nationals in the island nation. New Delhi’s statement came on Tuesday in the wake of decision of Maldives government to terminate the agreement with the GMR Group to manage the Male International Airport.
External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Syed Akbaruddin said in New Delhi that the investment by GMR represents the single largest foreign direct investment in the history of Maldives and the decision to terminate their contract without due consultation, sends a very negative signal to foreign investors and international community.
He said India will continue to remain engaged with the Maldives on the issue expecting that the country will fulfill all legal processes.
