India asks China to stop activities in PoK

Taking a strong exception to Beijing’s assurance to Islamabad in building projects inside Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), India asked China to cease such activities. Reacting sharply to the statement of the Chinese President that his country will continue to engage in projects in the Pak occupied Kashmir , the External Affairs Ministry spokesman hoped that Beijing will take a long term view of the India-China relations, and stop such activities in areas illegally occupied by Pakistan. The spokesman said that Pakistan has been in illegal occupation of parts the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir since 1947 and Beijing is fully aware of India’s position as well as its concerns about Chinese activities in POK. <br/><br/>The Chinese President Hu Jintao, during a meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, outlined a major project to upgrade the Karakoram highway connecting the two countries overland and Chinese help in the Neelam-Jhelum hydroelectric project in PoK.<br/><br/>Earlier last month the Pakistan deputy High commissioner was summoned to the foreign ministry and submitted a note protesting against the proposed construction of China funded massive 7000-mw hydro electric project in the northern areas, in POK .<br/><br/>India says that the boundary question with China has to be resolved through bilateral understanding and peaceful means. In an exclusive interview to All India Radio, the Foreign Secretary Mrs. Nirupama Rao said that there is a mechanism of special representatives in place adopted by both the governments on the issue. Thirteen round of such discussions have been held so far. Admitting that it is a complex issue, she noted that there exist some conceptual differences on the territorial issue which need to be bridged with more focused efforts from both the sides.<br/><br/>Rejecting China's claims over Arunachal Pradesh, India made it clear that the state is an integral part of the country and its Prime Minister has every right to visit it. Addressing a press conference in Kolkata yesterday, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said, the just-concluded Assembly election has proved that it was held under the Indian Constitution. Mr. Mukherjee said that just a few months back people of the state had sent their representatives to Parliament under the Indian constitution. He said It was therefore appropriate that the Prime Minister of the country should visit Arunachal Pradesh as leader of the Congress party for election campaign.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, BJP demanded an all-party meeting on the Chinese issue which will discuss the entire gamut of India's relationship with that country. BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters in New Delhi yesterday that China's objection to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to the northeastern state was against the norms of international diplomacy.<br/><br/>
