India and Sri Lanka have stressed the need for all fishermen to be treated in a humane manner and agreed that the use of force cannot be justified under any circumstances. Sri Lanka also underlined the need to respect the International Maritime Boundary Line while carrying out fishing activities. The two nations also discussed measures to expedite the release of bonafide detained fishermen in each other's countries. A joint statement was released after the 3rd meeting of the India-Sri Lanka Joint Working Group on Fisheries, which concluded in New Delhi on Tuesday. The Lankan delegation was led by Ranjith Uyangoda, Additional Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs of Sri Lanka, while the Indian delegation was headed by T S Tirumurti, Joint Secretary (BSM), and Ministry of External Affairs.
