India and Myanmar sign pacts to boost counter terrorism cooperation and improve economic ties

India has signed five pacts to boost counter-terror cooperation and cement cultural ties with Myanmar. The two countries signed the pacts after Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh held talks with the visiting head of the Myanmar Peace and Development Council Than Shwe over a wide range of issues. Among the pacts, on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters aims at deepening bilateral cooperation in combating transnational organized crime, terrorism, drug trafficking, money laundering and smuggling of arms and explosives. The two sides also signed pacts in the areas of small development projects, science and technology and information cooperation. In a joint statement issued after the talks, the two sides decided to intensify cooperation in the area of energy and focused on dealing with the menace of terrorism.
