Indian and Myanmar today signed five agreements including one on Mutual Assistance Treaty in criminal matters. The signing of the treaty will help the two countries to deal effectively with terrorism and international organised crime.The other pacts include grant of assistance for implementation of small development projects, agreements in the field of science and technology and MoUs on information cooperation and conservation and restoration of Ananda temple in Myanmar. The agreements were signed after extensive discussions between the Chairman of the Peace and Development Council of Myanmar, General Than Shwe and the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh this evening. In a joint statement issued after the talks, the two sides decided to intensify cooperation in the area of energy and focused on dealing with the menace of terrorism. The two leaders agreed that security cooperation should be given immediate attention since terrorist insurgents and criminals undermine the social and political fabric of a nation. Both the leaders reiterated the assurance that they will not allow their territory to be used for activities inimical to each other. The two sides also agreed not to allow their territory to be used for training and other operations by terrorists and other insurgent groups. The two sides decided to enhance rail and road connectivity and India pledged aid of 60 million US dollars. Early in the day, the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding. This will of enable Mayanmar to have a Line of Credit facility of 60 million US Dollars for Railway development. India also pledged an aid of 10 million US dollars for procurement of agriculture machinery from India. The two sides also decided to enhance cooperation in the hydro-carbon sector and Myanmar invited more Indian investment in this sector. The statement said that Myanmar extended its support to India for its permanent membership of the UN Security Council. Mr. Than Shwe reached in New Delh who is on a five day visit exchanged views with the Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari , External Affairs Minister, Mr. S.M. Krishna and leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Mrs. Sushma Swaraj. The President Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil organised a banquet in the honour of the visiting dignitary at Rashtrapati Bhawan this evening. Mr. Than Shwe will visit Hyderabad, Kolkata and Jamshedpur before leaving back home.
