India and Malaysia have signed an agreement to implement Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement, CECA, in July next year. The two countries have also signed agreements and Memorandum of Understandings in the areas of Information Technology and Services, Tourism, Traditional Medicine, Cultural Exchanges and Research and Development. The agreements were signed after extensive talks between Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and his Malaysian counter part Mohammad Najib Razak at Putrajaya in Kuala Lumpur. A joint statement on the framework for strategic partnership between India and Malaysia was issued at the end of the talks.The two Prime Ministers discussed issues related to trade and economic infrastructure development, defence cooperation, maritime security and combating all forms of terrorism. A joint statement of the framework laying down a roadmap for strategic partnership between India and Malaysia was also issued. The two Prime Ministers also discussed a wide range of bilateral, regional and international issues.The two leaders agreed to explore the possibility of a joint collaboration on project of mutual interest of the defence sector. They also decided to enhance their cooperation in counter terrorism. This includes setting up of a bilateral joint working group on counter terrorism on an early date and information sharing. In a brief interaction with the press, the Malaysian Prime Minister said that with the implementation of Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement, CECA, the trade target of 15 billion dollars by 2015 will be achieved.
