India against creation of human rights commission within Commonwealth: LS Speaker

India does not support the demand for creation of a human rights commission within the Commonwealth. Speaking to AIR in Colombo at the end of the 58th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar made it clear that in a democracy the voice of the people is supreme and parliament speaks on behalf of the people.

Kumar was leading a 62 member delegation of parliamentarians from India at the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference. The Conference saw workshops on 8 major issues, including need to improve representation of women in parliaments and making use of democratic institutions for conflict resolution.
