India-Afghanistan call for shutting down of terrorist sanctuaries

Afghanistan has sought closer cooperation with India in combating terrorism. The National Security Advisor of Afghanistan met the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Tuesday and conveyed that Kabul has evidence of cross border involvement in the attack of the Indian Embassy two years ago. Official sources said without referring to Pakistan Mr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta called for shutting down of terrorist sanctuaries in its neighbourhood. He briefed the Prime Minister about the Pakistan's complicity in aiding and abetting violence and instability in Afghanistan through its proxies. He held discussions with his Indian counterpart Shiv Shankar Menon and called on the External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna. The upgradation of security of around 3,500 Indians working in Afghanistan figured prominently in their discussions. The visit of Ragin Dadfar Spanta comes close on the heels of the visit of their Foreign Minister last week. Both sides in the talks held between the two Foreign Ministers reiterated their determination to ensure terrorists and extremists groups targeting Afghanistan and other countries in the region are denied safe heaven and sanctuaries. AIR correspondent reports that Kabul has been accusing Pakistan of harbouring Al-Qaeda and other militant groups to destabilize Afghanistan.
