The Lok Sabha Speaker called for steps to make the goal of a fully literate India into a reality. Making a reference to this effect in the Lok Sabha to mark the International Literacy Day today, Mrs Meira Kumar said that India has achieved a literacy rate of more than 74 per cent. She said while this is a big improvement, it is surely not enough, she said, despite best efforts, total literacy still remains an elusive dream. The Loksabha Speaker expressed concern over gender-based inequality and a low female literacy rate.
