India abstention on UNHRC vote: Sri Lanka to release all Indian fishermen in custody as goodwill gesture

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa today announced the release of all Indian fishermen in its custody. Speaking to All India Radio, Spokesman to Sri Lankan President, Mohan Samarnayake said that the release has been ordered as a gesture of goodwill in response to India’s stand in United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva yesterday.

India had abstained from voting for the US sponsored resolution calling for international inquiry into allegations of war crimes in Sri Lanka. 93 Indian fishermen are currently in the custody of Sri Lanka. They were caught by Sri Lankan Navy on charges of trespassing and poaching in Sri Lankan waters
