India abstains from voting on UNSC resolution on situation in Ukraine; calls to return to path of diplomacy

<span style="color: #222222;">A resolution on the situation on Ukraine was tabled for action in the UN Security Council. In the 15 member Council, the resolution received 11 votes in favour, Russia voted against it and three nations India, UAE and China abstained. Since Russia voted against the resolution that is veto against the resolution, it was not passed.<br />''<br />''India abstained and issued an Explanation of Vote EOV after the vote. In its EOV, India called for return to path of diplomacy. It called for respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. India also called for immediate cessation of violence and hostilities as was also conveyed by Prime Minister Modi to President Putin. It said, all member states to honour principles of international law and UN Charter, as these provide a constructive way forward. India's Permanent Representative  to UN, TS Tirumurti at UNSC meeting on Ukraine said that it is a matter of regret that the path of diplomacy was given up. We must return to it. For all these reasons, India has chosen to abstain on this resolution.  <br />''It said, dialogue is only answer to settle differences and disputes. India said, welfare and security of Indian community, in particular stranded students and their evacuation from Ukraine is its immediate priority. It said, no solution can ever arrived at cost of human lives and India is deeply disturbed by the recent turn of developments in Ukraine.<br />''<br />''India maintained its consistent, steadfast and balanced position on the matter. India has been in touch with all sides urging parties concerned to return to the negotiating table.<br />''<br />''Sources said, by abstaining, India retained the option of reaching out to relevant sides in an effort to bridge the gap and find the middle ground with an aim to foster dialogue and diplomacy.<br />''<br />''An earlier draft of the resolution had proposed moving the resolution under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, which provides the framework within which the Security Council may take enforcement action. However, this was dropped in the final version that was put to vote.</span><br />
