Indefinite curfew clamped in 4 police station areas of Goalpara district

In Assam, indefinite curfew has been clamped in four police station areas of Goalpara district following widespread group clashes and attempt to torch houses by miscreants along Meghalaya boundary. The district administration promulgated curfew in Dhupdhora, Rongjuli, Dudhnoi and Krishnai police station areas from 6.30 last evening after killing of four local coal labourers by miscreants at Bajengdoba area that followed large-scale group clashes. The police had to open fire on a group of miscreants trying to torch houses in Rongjuli area. One person reportedly died and several others were injured in the firing. Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioners of two bordering districts- East Garo Hills and Goalpara had a high-level meeting at Goalpara town as a part of bringing the situation under control. A peace committee has been constituted involving local Garo and Rava community leaders of both Assam and Meghalaya sides to pacify the tension. More than 2,500 violence-affected people of East Garo hills are taking shelter in different parts Goalpara district in Assam.
