Government is considering the demand for increasing the cap on subsidized cooking gas cylinders. Replying to supplementaries during the question hour in the Lok Sabha today, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Veerappa Moily said the matter will be taken up with the Finance Minister and the Prime Minister.
He pointed out that the government is burdened with a huge subsidy amounting to 36,000 crore rupees for providing six subsidized cylinders per year. The Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj asked the government to withdraw the cap.
She drew the attention of the House to the hardship faced by the people on account of lesser number of subsidized LPG cylinders. Ms. Swaraj was supported by several members from opposition parties. Sudip Bandyopadhyaya of the Trinamool Congress demanded 24 cooking gas cylinders per year while his party colleagues rushed to the well in support of the demand.
