Increased vigilance against bootlegging from Goa into Karnataka has led to the seizure of nearly thirty thousand litres of illicit liquor and over three thousand litres of Feni last year. Excise Minister of Karnataka, Renukcharya informed on Wednesday in Bangalore that to put an end to rampant smuggling of illicit liquor from Goa, he is meeting the Chief Minister of Goa, Digambar Kamat tomorrow with a request to control bootlegging on their side of the border. The Minister informed that 32 distilleries and several liquor shops have mushroomed near Goa-Karnataka border which need to be monitored strictly and bootleggers brought to book.AIR correspondent adds that Karnataka which has banned arrack and toddy, is a lucrative market for bootleggers as liquor and excise tax are cheaper in Goa.
