In Assam, the number of women contestants in the ensuing two-phased polls for the 126-member Assembly in the State has increased by 1.64 per cent compared to the last elections held in 2006. According to State Election Office sources at Guwahati, out of a total of 981 candidates left in the fray for both the phases of polling this year, 85 among them are women. Meanwhile, aggressive campaigning is on in South Assam comprising 15 constituencies.
