The Income Tax department today surveyed business premises of onion and vegetable traders including at Azadpur wholesale market in Delhi to detect its hoarding and illegal profiteering. According to the IT sources, the officials of the I-T department began an early morning operation of checking and obtaining the account books and ledgers of large wholesale onion traders based in Delhi and NCR. The department's action was to crackdown on hoarding and over-valuation of onion stocks. they said. The I-T department had last week conducted similar survey operations in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and few other states.NAFED Chairman, Dr Brijender Singh said that with the arrival of 300 metric tonnes of onions in the national capital , the commodity will be sold at 35 rupees a kilogram in all retail outlets of Kendriya Bhandars , Mother Dairy and NAFED across the capital. He said the government will be paying 42 kilograms per KG for the commodity but because of a 30 crore rupee subsidy to NAFED and National Cooperative Consumer Federation(NCCF) , it has been possible to sell the onions at 35 rupees a KG to the consumers. AIR Correspondent who visited various such retail outlets in the city, said that onions are being sold at the price ranging between 38 to 60 rupees per kilogram.
