Income tax dept increases limits for filing appeals against tax evaders

The income tax department has increased the limits for filing appeals against tax evaders in the tribunal as well as courts.An official statement said for filing an appeal in the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), the tax effect should be minimum 3 lakh rupees, against 2 lakh rupees earlier, Similarly, for appeals in the High Courts, the tax effect limit has been increased to 10 lakh rupees , from 4 lakh rupees. In the case of Supreme Court, the minimum amount under dispute should be 25 lakh rupees, against 10 lakh rupees earlier.Last year, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had asked the I-T department to re-examine the way it handles tax disputes and called it the biggest litigant in the entire government.Meanwhile, the department also said that in order to speed up refunds, TDS claims in all tax returns will be accepted without verification, if the difference between the amount claimed in the return and the amount reflected in the TDS return does not exceed 1 lakh rupees.
