Incheon Asian games: Squash assures medal for India

On the first day of Incheon Asian Games, India ropes a Gold and a Bronze medal and created path for few.AIR correspondent reports the day's progress, the day ended in Incheon promising medals for India tomorrow.Racquet events kept the day on a high in the midst of disappointments.Compatriot Dipika Pallikal and Joshna Chinnapa won their respective matches to reach quarters.The draw has pitted them to face each other for a semifinal spot and in squash a medal is insured for semi finalists.In any case India will get a medal.In Men's singles Saurav Ghosal advanced to the quarterfinals. India's star studded women's badminton team kept their quest for medal alive as they reach semi finals defeating Thailand.Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu and duo of Ashwini Ponappa – PV Sindhu powered the team in their 3-2 win over tough opponents.However, the Men's team had a tough luck in the team event as they lost to Hosts South Korea 3-Nil in the Round-of-16.In Tennis, the Indian women's team advanced to the second round beating Oman, 3-Nil. In mat events, Wushu saw Narender Grewal in men's sanda 60kg category and Sanathoi Devi in women's sanda 52kg advancing to the last 8.Whereas, Judokas fail to clear Bronze hurdle.Kalpana Devi in women's 52 kg and Shushila Devi in women's 48 kg lost their repechage final, missing out bronze narrowly.Men's Basketball and Volleyball team also advanced to the next round.However, the biggest disappoinment of the day came from weight lifters as Commonwealth Games Gold medallists – Sukhen Dey and Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu did not even had podium finishes.The day shone early on for India as shooting brought laurels.Marksmen Jitu Rai shot Gold in the Men's 50-metre Pistol event this Asiad's first gold for India but medals tally was opened by Shooter Shweta Chaudhary as she won a Bronze in the 10-metre Air Pistol event.A world record was also established today by North Korea's Om Yun Chol in the clean and jerk, lifting 170 kilograms in the men's 56-kg class.Now, all eyes will be set on the Indian Men's Hockey Team as they begin their campaign tomorrow.
