The United States lost another 95,000 jobs in September as public sector cuts outpaced hiring by the private sector. According to the Labour Department, the fall was almost double the loss of 54,000 jobs in August. A total of 1,59,000 Government lay-offs were made in September with the private sector adding 64,000 positions, the weakest gain since June. Of the public sector job cuts, about 76,000 were in local government, with a large number of lay-offs among teachers.The so-called under-employment rate rose to 17.1 per cent in September from 16.7 per cent in August.
