The Sambalpur District Court sentenced a 26 year old boy to death for rape and murder of a 7 year old girl on 3rd September. In one of the sensational cases, the District Judge Bhibhu Prasad Routray had convicted Pradeep Dalei under section 302 of IPC, on 1st October, just 28 days after the crime.After pronouncement of the punishment the Public Prosecutor Artatran Mishra said, “the court viewed it as rarest of the rare crime and the boy do not deserve any leniency. The Judge said the crime is inhuman and convicted should be hanged till death”. The court had also convicted Dalai for kidnapping and tampering evidences besides rape and murder of a minor.According to the prosecution, Dalai had raped and murdered the student of Class II, who is known to him. On the pretext of offering chowmein in the evening he took the girl on his cycle. Since the girl was missing till late night, her parents lodged a complaint in the police station. During the interrogation, the boy confessed to the crime and took the police to the site where he had hidden her body.In one of the speediest trials in Odisha, the court completed the trial in less than a month while examining 12 witnesses and evidence. The public prosecutor added that the convict’s counsel said that he would move the high court against the sentence.
