In response to India's travel advisory on risk of violence in Australia, Dy. PM says, violence is common in big cities

The Australian government has played down a travel advisory issued by India warning of the risk of violence against Indian students in the city of Melbourne. Acting Australian foreign minister Simon Crean urged Indian leaders to avoid fuelling hysteria and said Melbourne was safe for visitors. Australia's Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard insisted that her country is safe for all international students and said acts of violence occur in big cities around the world. India had on Tuesday issued an advisory asking its citizens studying or planning to study in Australia to take certain basic precautions to ensure their safety. Pointing to several incidents of assault on Indians in Australia and particularly in Melbourne, including the killing of 21-year-old student Nitin Garg on January 2, the advisory said students should be alert about their own security while moving around. Speaking on the attacks on Indian students, External Affairs Minister Mr. S.M. Krishna said that these attacks will have an impact on the relations between the two countries.
